What Clients Have Said

Brought in my father's Seiko 5 that had been sitting in a drawer for about eight years. I honestly expected to be told it was beyond economical repair. Instead I received a written estimate and a clear explanation of what was wrong. The overhaul took around four weeks and it now runs to within about five seconds a day. I am genuinely pleased with the result and with how straightforwardly the whole thing was handled.

I was travelling through Chiang Mai when my everyday watch stopped. Found Mainspring through a recommendation from a guest house owner. They changed the battery, checked the seals and gave me a short note on the condition — all done in two days. More than I expected from a walk-in. The watch has been running without problems since.

Took in a vintage French watch I had inherited from my grandmother. The vintage revival service took about ten weeks in total, partly because some parts needed to be sourced from abroad — which they were upfront about from the start. The documentation they prepared is genuinely impressive: photographs of the movement at several stages and a written summary of everything done. The watch now keeps reasonable time for its age. My only small note is that communication during the sourcing wait could have been a little more frequent, but the final result speaks for itself.

I have used Mainspring twice now during visits to Chiang Mai. The first time for a straightforward mechanical service on a dress watch, and this year for a battery refresh on a daily quartz. Both times the price matched exactly what was quoted, the timeline was accurate and the watch came back clean with a service note. That consistency is exactly what I look for.

My husband's grandfather left a Thai-market Omega from the 1960s to our family. I knew it needed work but was not sure how much. Mainspring examined it, told me honestly that the movement needed a full overhaul and some parts were worn, and gave me a written plan before any work started. They also did not try to re-polish the case, which I had specifically asked them not to. The watch now runs well and the documentation they prepared has real sentimental value to us.

Brought in a mid-1980s mechanical piece for a full service. The assessment process was thorough and the written estimate was reassuringly detailed. Service itself took about five weeks. The watch came back running noticeably better — significantly quieter and more consistent than before. I would have given five stars but the turnaround was slightly longer than the initial estimate, though I was kept informed when it became clear that would be the case.

Three Projects in Detail

PROJECT 01 — MOVEMENT OVERHAUL

1978 ETA 2824-2 in a vintage diver's case

CHALLENGE

The owner — a Chiang Mai-based collector — had purchased the watch at a market and was unsure of its service history. It was gaining approximately 45 seconds a day and the crown felt stiff.

APPROACH

Full disassembly revealed dried lubricant throughout and a worn keyless-works spring. After ultrasonic cleaning and fresh lubrication, the spring was replaced. The owner was contacted before any parts were ordered.

OUTCOME

The watch left the workshop gaining +8 seconds per day — within acceptable range for a movement of its age. Crown action restored. Timeline: 4 weeks.

"I was prepared for bad news. The result was better than I expected and the invoice matched the estimate exactly." — anonymous, Bangkok-based collector

PROJECT 02 — VINTAGE REVIVAL & DOCUMENTATION

1955 Swiss pocket watch, family inheritance

CHALLENGE

A Thai family brought in a Swiss-made pocket watch inherited from a grandfather who had worked at the Thai royal court. The movement was stopped and the chain had corroded. The family wanted it preserved and running, with documentation for future generations.

APPROACH

The movement received a full overhaul. A period-consistent chain was sourced from a specialist supplier in Europe. The case and dial were left untouched as requested. Photography was taken at each stage of disassembly and reassembly. The complete history was written up in Thai and English.

OUTCOME

The watch was returned in running order with a complete documented history. The family now has a record that will outlast the current generation. Timeline: 11 weeks.

PROJECT 03 — BATTERY & SEAL REFRESH

Everyday sports quartz, professional diver

CHALLENGE

A dive instructor brought in a water-resistant sports watch that had stopped. She had been using it in the water regularly and wanted the seals checked before returning it to active use.

APPROACH

New battery fitted, all gaskets inspected — the crown seal showed early degradation and was replaced. A water-resistance test was carried out at 10 ATM with the case closed. Written condition note issued.

OUTCOME

Watch returned to service in two days, confirmed water-resistant to specification. Client was advised to have seals re-checked in two years regardless of visible condition. Timeline: 2 days.
